Big Bend is famous for having nothing: no service across most of 800,000 acres, hours from a town of any size, and some of the darkest skies in North America. That is the appeal, right up until someone needs to reach you.
It is a long way in and a long way out, so this is a trip where a dish is less about working and more about not being genuinely unreachable for a week.
Sky and obstruction
Excellent, among the best on this list. Chihuahuan desert means low scrub, no canopy, and huge open horizons, so a dish in the Chisos basin flats, out at Rio Grande Village, or on a backcountry road will see nearly the whole sky. The one real exception is inside the Chisos Basin proper, which is ringed by mountains and does cut the horizon noticeably. Out on the desert floor it is effortless.
