The Badlands are open prairie with sparse coverage, and the Black Hills are forested and hilly with dead pockets throughout. Custer State Park, the Needles Highway, and most of the dispersed camping in the national forest are unserved.
There is also a seasonal reality: for one week each August the region absorbs an enormous influx and whatever terrestrial capacity exists is saturated. Satellite is not affected by that congestion.

What the dish will actually see here
Two different answers. The Badlands and the surrounding grassland are wide open, essentially unobstructed, and about as easy as Moab. The Black Hills are ponderosa pine on rolling terrain, so a site down in a gulch between wooded ridges will lose horizon in two directions at once. Ridge tops and meadows are easy; deep timbered draws are not.
Once you are set up, the captive portal on your router draws the real obstruction map from your own dish, so you can see exactly which part of the sky is blocked and move before it costs you a call.
How you get it
Shipped to you. The Starlink Mini kit ships anywhere in the country ahead of your dates. The portable power station and solar panel are local-delivery items in Colorado and cannot be shipped, so plan your own power for this trip.
