It is also a staging city for the drive west, Big Bend and the Trans-Pecos are a long day out, and completely unserved when you get there.
Sky and obstruction
The coastal plain is flat and open, which is easy, but east Texas pine gets tall and dense and a site under it will lose sky. On the coast and out on the plain it is straightforward. Head west and it becomes some of the best satellite country anywhere.
