The dunes are open sand. The Northwoods in July are a closed crown.
Chicago is the city those lake trips leave from. The short one is east, to Indiana Dunes. The long ones are north: Door County, the Wisconsin Northwoods, and the Upper Peninsula.
The lakeshore and the dunes are open sand. The cabin country those same trips end in is maple, pine, and a full summer canopy. That is a different sky from the beach, on the same weekend.
Sky and obstruction
Nothing on these trips is a canyon. The country north and east of Chicago is flat or low hills, so rock does not take the horizon. Trees do. Indiana Dunes and an open Lake Michigan beach have sky. A Northwoods or Upper Peninsula cabin under hardwoods and pine, in July, often has none. A dock, a beach, or a wide lawn down to the water is the placement. A site a few yards back under the crown is the one that fails. After leaf drop, the same hardwood sites open up.
