Open farmland in town, closed hardwood hollows once you go south.
Indianapolis is open farmland with ordinary coverage. The trips that lose it go south, into Brown County, the Hoosier National Forest, and the coves on Lake Monroe.
The hills south of town are low oak, maple, and beech. In summer the hollows close over the road. The obstruction is the crown.
Sky and obstruction
Central Indiana farmland has a wide horizon and little canopy. Southern Indiana in leaf is a closed crown. Brown County and the Hoosier National Forest put oak, maple, and beech over camps and hollows from late spring through early fall. Lake Monroe adds coves where the trees come down to the water. A boat ramp, a field edge, or an open shoreline sees sky. A hollow camp under the crown has little of it. After leaf drop the same sites open up.
