Creosote in the basin, pine and granite once you climb the sky islands.
Tucson sits in a desert basin of saguaro and creosote. The trips leave that basin in two directions. Up is Mount Lemmon and the Santa Catalinas. Out is Organ Pipe, the Dragoons, and Cochise Stronghold.
The basin still has towers near town. Organ Pipe and the forest roads on the ranges do not. The ranges also add rock and pine the basin never has.
Sky and obstruction
A camp on the creosote flats, among scattered saguaros, has a low horizon and almost no canopy. That is the basin. Mount Lemmon and the other sky islands switch to pine and steep granite. A camp in a canyon along the Catalina Highway, or in the boulders at Cochise Stronghold, can lose a large piece of sky to rock and trees. Ridges, meadow openings, and pullouts with a gap see sky. The canyon bottom under pines has little of it.
