Creosote basins east of the mountains, oak canyons once you climb.
San Diego stages the desert to the east. Anza-Borrego, Ocotillo Wells, and the washes toward the Salton Sea run out of towers once you leave the mountain towns.
The other trip is up, not out. The Laguna Mountains, Cuyamaca, and Julian are still in Cleveland National Forest, and the vegetation changes from creosote to oak and pine as the canyons close in.
Sky and obstruction
Desert basins east of the Peninsular Ranges are low scrub: creosote, ocotillo, and open washes, with a wide horizon. A camp on the bajada in Anza-Borrego or Ocotillo Wells usually has sky in the directions that matter. A narrow wash with tall banks on both sides is the exception. Climb into Cuyamaca or the Laguna Mountains and the site changes to oak woodland and steeper walls. Julian and the higher forest camps want a clearing or a ridge, not a pad under the oaks.
