Lake Norman still has towers. Pisgah and Linville Gorge do not.
Charlotte is the city those mountain trips leave from. Lake Norman is still in the metro. The Parkway, Pisgah, and Linville Gorge are the drives that run out of towers.
Linville is a gorge, so the floor loses sky to rock as well as to trees. Pisgah is hardwood and rhododendron on steep ground. A weekend from this city can hit either one.
Sky and obstruction
Lake Norman coves can sit under pine. The hard case is west of town. Linville Gorge cuts the east and west horizon with rock, and the rim still has trees. Pisgah adds a hardwood and rhododendron crown on steep slopes. A bald, a rock outcrop, or a wide campground meadow sees sky. A camp on the gorge floor, or under rhododendron in a hollow, has little. If you can see the opposite wall and the trees meet overhead, move the dish to the rim or an opening.
The sign-in page shows what the dish sees in real time, so you can reposition it before a meeting or call.
