Open sand on the Outer Banks, loblolly pine around Jordan Lake.
The Triangle sits between two kinds of trip. East is the Outer Banks, open beach and sound, with maritime forest behind the dunes. Closer in, Jordan Lake and the Uwharrie are loblolly pine and hardwood.
The islands lose towers between the towns. The pine country loses them on the forest roads, and it also loses sky to the trees, which the beach does not.
Sky and obstruction
An Outer Banks beach or an open sound shore has a low horizon and no canopy. The maritime forest behind the dunes is a different site on the same island. Buxton Woods and the Nags Head woods put live oak and pine over the camp. Around the Triangle, loblolly pine at Jordan Lake and in the Uwharrie does the same job. A boat ramp or a field sees sky. A pad under tall pines has little, even when the lake is a short walk away.
