Limestone farmland around town, sandstone walls once you reach the gorge.
Louisville is rolling farmland with coverage. The trips go east to Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone cliff lines, or south into Mammoth Cave country.
The gorge is sandstone walls and eastern hemlock. Mammoth Cave country is sinkhole plain and hardwood hollows. Both lose towers. Only the gorge also takes the sky with rock.
Sky and obstruction
Farmland around Louisville is an open horizon. Red River Gorge is a different sky. Cliff lines and eastern hemlock in the coves close the view from the sides and from above. A ridge camp, a cliff-top clearing, or a wide flat along the Red River sees sky. A camp on the gorge floor under hemlock, against the wall, has little. Mammoth Cave country has no tall sandstone walls. It has hardwood hollows that close over in summer. A field edge sees sky there. A hollow under the oaks has little of it until leaf drop.
