Starlink Rental in Los Angeles
The location scout picked somewhere with no service. Again.
Los Angeles is the largest production market in the world and the single biggest source of the highest-value rental we do: a location unit that needs to move dailies from somewhere the scout chose specifically because nothing is there. Film gear marketplaces already list satellite terminals alongside cameras, which tells you the category is established.
The second driver is geography. Joshua Tree, Death Valley, the Eastern Sierra, and the Mojave are all a half-day drive, and all of them are dark.
Sky and obstruction
What the dish will actually see here
Where LA rentals actually get used is superb terrain: Mojave and Colorado desert, low scrub, big horizons. The recurring problem is not the landscape, it is base camp. A dish placed between production trailers, next to a condor, or under a silk is obstructed by your own setup. Treat its position as part of the layout, put it at the edge of camp on the tripod with a clear view, and you will not think about it again.
Once you are set up, the captive portal on your router draws the real obstruction map from your own dish, so you can see exactly which part of the sky is blocked and move before it costs you a call.
How you get it
Shipped to you. The Starlink Mini kit ships anywhere in the country ahead of your dates. The portable power station and solar panel are local-delivery items in Colorado and cannot be shipped, so plan your own power for this trip.
