Highway 50 and Interstate 80 leave the valley and enter the fir.
Sacramento is the last big city before Highway 50 and Interstate 80 climb into the Sierra. Gold Country camps on the American River, and Desolation Wilderness trailheads, are why people here take a dish.
The valley floor still has coverage. It starts to fail in the foothill canyons above Auburn, and it is gone in the fir around the high camps on Highway 50.
Sky and obstruction
The Sacramento Valley is open agricultural sky. The obstruction starts in the Sierra foothills, where ponderosa pine, cedar, and white fir fill the American River gorges and the higher lake basins. A river bar or a meadow sees sky. A site under fir against a canyon wall has none. The Highway 50 corridor splits the same way: open granite near the passes, closed timber in the campgrounds below them.
The sign-in page shows what the dish sees in real time, so you can reposition it before a meeting or call.
