Open headlands one hour out, closed redwood canopy the hour after.
Trips out of the Bay Area lose cell service in two kinds of country. North is Point Reyes and the Mendocino coast. South is Highway 1 through Big Sur.
The coast itself splits. The Marin Headlands and the outer Point Reyes bluffs are grass and rock. Muir Woods, Samuel P. Taylor, and the redwood parks in the Santa Cruz Mountains are a closed canopy of coast redwood and Douglas fir.
Sky and obstruction
Summer mornings on this coast often sit under a marine layer. The obstruction that matters is the trees, not the weather you can see. A camp under coast redwood or Douglas fir in Marin, Sonoma, or the Santa Cruz Mountains can have almost no sky. A meadow or a beach on the headlands has the opposite site: wind, and a clear view. Big Sur is the mixed case. Highway 1 pullouts on the outer cliffs are open. Camps in the redwood creeks just inland of the highway are not.
